NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell has asked authorities to investigate the use of a young child photographed holding a sign calling for the beheading of those who insult the Prophet, as a Muslim leader says he can't rule out violence erupting within Victoria's Islamic community despite calls for calm.
Mr O'Farrell said he asked the Family and Community Services Department to investigate the concerning incident.
"I asked the minister yesterday what can be done," Mr O'Farrell said on 2GB radio this morning.

He said he expected a reply later today.
The image of a Muslim mother photographing the little boy with the sign has infuriated the public, including members of the Muslim community.
The Premier said if he was supplied with an image of the woman he would be asking authorities to find out who she is.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard yesterday said it was "not the Australian way" for children or anyone to hold offensive signs calling for killing.
